What Lenses do I use

What lenses do I use

I often get asked what lens do I use for both fashion and wedding photography so I thought I would do a blog about my favourite lenses and why I use them.

Let me start by saying I’m a firm believer in technique over equipment I always emphasize the importance of good photography skills over the equipment used.  A good photographer can take amazing pictures with an entry level camera but as a professional photographer having the right equipment will help ensure you achieve the best results you want without compromising in quality.

Below is a list of my preferred lenses and a brief explanation on why I have chosen them.

Nikon 24-70mm 2.8

The 24-70 is a fantastic lens to use for weddings great for wide and group shots and the first dance. As a wide lens its great to capture all the venue details and candid moments of the wedding couple and guests. This lens is my second most use lens for wedding photography and a real work horse.

Nikon 85mm 1.4

The 85mm 1.4 is by far the best lens for portrait images, with a shallow depth of field you can create some great effects by blurring the background and keeping your subject sharp. I often use this lens for commercial work and bride/groom preparation portrait session.

Nikon 70-200mm 2.8

The 70-200mm is my favourite lens alongside the 24-70mm 2.8 this is my most used lens and for good reason. The 70-200 is a telephoto zoom which is great for portraits and zooming in and catching candid moments from the other side of the room. I use this lens for both weddings and fashion shoots  for its pin sharp image quality, handling and range.

Sigma 105 Macro 2.8

The Sigma 105 Macro is great for two things firstly detail shots in wedding photography. Be it the wedding rings or details on the brides dress, make up or jewellery this pin sharp lens is fantastic for close up shots with a shallow depth of field. Secondly for portraits this lens is perfect due to it being pin sharp and for commercial beauty shoots its perfect for capturing close up make up shots.
